What to Expect in Your First Month

The Taster Session: A Useful Starting Point

he taster session is not a test. It is a chance for us to talk about what you want from training, what may have stopped you in the past, and what feels realistic around your work and life.

We look at simple movements: sitting, standing, bending, pushing, pulling and carrying. This gives me a useful starting point and helps you begin to understand how your body moves. You do not need to know exercise names or how to use equipment before you arrive. That is what the coaching is for.

One simple movement I often use during the taster session is an overhead squat.

Why I Use an Overhead Squat?

An overhead squat is not a test of how much weight you can lift. It is a simple way for me to see how your hips, knees, ankles and upper body work together. It helps me identify where to begin and choose the right exercises for your early sessions.

THE FIRST FOUR TO EIGHT WEEKS:
GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BODY

The first few sessions are about getting to know your body and finding the exercises that work best for you. What you see in a book, on YouTube or on Instagram may work well for somebody else, but it will not always suit your body, your confidence or your starting point.

We focus on quality of movement, good technique and building a mind–body connection. This means learning what a movement should feel like and which muscles should be doing the work. For example, when we practise a chest press, I want you to understand how to use your chest, shoulders and triceps rather than guessing or feeling the effort in the wrong place.

This process takes time, and it should. If you train twice a week, most people begin to understand their movement patterns and gain confidence within around four to six weeks. If you train once a week, the process may take a little longer. The aim is not to rush through exercises; it is to build a foundation that helps you train safely and make genuine progress.

Even in the early weeks, people often notice benefits. They may feel more positive about themselves, more aware of how they move, and more conscious of the choices they make outside the gym. Having a coach and a clear plan creates structure and accountability. You begin to realise that training is not about being perfect; it is about learning, improving and becoming more capable over time.

Tactile Cueing: Feeling the Right Muscles Work

With the client’s consent, I may use light hands-on cues to help them feel the position and muscles we are working on. This is called tactile cueing. It can make technique easier to understand and helps build a stronger mind–body connection.

The aim is not to force a movement. It is to help the client recognise what good position and control should feel like.

Progress Starts With the Basics

Once a client understands the movement and feels more confident, we gradually build strength. Progress is not only about lifting heavier weights. It can also mean better control, a stronger position and the confidence to do exercises that once felt unfamiliar.

Every step is built on the movement quality, technique and body awareness developed in the early sessions.
